Dominik Lejman. Monk

The central figure in the composition refers to Caspar David Friedrich’s 1810 painting Monk by the Sea.
Inspired by the idea behind Friedrich’s work, Lejman reintroduces a solitary figure through projection into the center of an abstract triptych that evokes associations with a landscape. Unlike Friedrich, however, Lejman abstracts the composition by animating — and, in a way, humanizing — a medical suit that becomes a kind of afterimage of the pandemic reality.
As the air escapes, the “pandemic” costume deflates and stiffens, stripping away the illusion of life — just as its projection merely simulates presence within the image.
The exhibition was prepared as part of Poznań Museum Night.
