In the presented series of paintings, Sebastian Krzywak begins with white-primed canvases that serve both as background and as active participants in the composition.

The first stage of Krzywak’s process involves a computer-generated drawing. The organic shapes, reminiscent of sea anemones, emerge from the use of a computer mouse, which gives rise to these distinctive visual forms.

In the following stages, the drawing gradually undergoes deformation. Paint poured over the surface partially disrupts it, guiding the artist toward new directions within the process. The resulting forms are a record of so-called controlled randomness.

The moment when the artist chooses to use tools such as a brush or sponge marks the only direct contact with the canvas. Everything else literally takes place in the air—in the space between the canvas and the airbrush, spray, or flowing paint.

In his creative process, Krzywak simultaneously assumes two roles: that of director and observer. The process itself suggests solutions that had previously gone unnoticed. By embracing chance and consciously leaving portions of the canvas white and untouched, Krzywak’s works evoke John Locke’s concept of the tabula rasa—a surface perpetually ready to begin a new chapter or end one at an unexpected moment.

The shapes that emerge during painting resemble distant memories: merging, overlapping, or disrupting one another. This idea resonates with the title of the exhibition—Eraserhead, borrowed from David Lynch’s film—which reflects on the fragility of reality, the elusiveness of memory, and the impermanence of lived experience. This ephemeral quality is expressed in the subtle washing out and fading of color on the unpainted background areas.

In his latest series, Krzywak allows two elements to coexist within each painting: sharply defined forms that serve as the backbone of the composition, and delicate layers that resemble a semi-transparent veil. Executed with a refined technique, these paintings form the artist’s unique visual language—one that invites the viewer to interpret the work on their own terms.
