"Journey to the Universe" - monographic exhibition by Jan "DOBSON" Dobkowski at DESA UNICUM
Between 2.08 and 24.08, the DESA Unicum auction house in Warsaw hosted a monographic exhibition of one of the leading protagonists of Polish contemporary art, Jan Dobkowski's "Journey to the Universe." It was a special event, as it marked the 80th birthday of the aritist, whose extremely prolific period of artistic work has spanned almost 60 years.
About 30 works from mainly early painting cycles, i.e. "Beyond Infinity," "Himalaya," "Pamukale," "Ocean" and "Australian Dream," as well as a dozen works on paper, were presented at the exhibition.
The cross-sectional view of Dobkowski's work fits perfectly with the exhibition's title suggesting the possibility for the viewer to get to know the seemingly disparate spheres that make up his world - his universe. Beginning with red-green compositions steeped in eroticism and sensuality built from intertwining organic anthropomorphic elements. Then moving on to compositions in which it is the nature that surrounds the artist and its forces, learned in almost every corner of the world, that are the impetus for the creation of a painting. Ending with the latest compositions created in pandemic reality, on which geometric figures become a means of artistic expression.
The diversity of these periods remains in close harmony due to the means of uniting them, which is the line. A line that, in his own words, "is everything," and thus allows the metaphorical traversing of the cosmos.
Congratulations!
