Opening of Barbara Falender's ‘Unity’
On Friday, 6 June 2025, Barbara Falender's first solo exhibition in Poznan in over 40 years opened. The curator of the exhibition entitled. ‘Unity’ is curated by Paweł Leszkowicz.
On display are four sculptures by Barbara Falender, which show the various themes present in her work that has been developing since the early 1970s. Each sculpture is located in a separate space, allowing viewers to contemplate their form and meanings. These are exceptional works, representing an important part of the history of modern sculpture in Poland. The exhibition is accompanied by preparatory drawings, showing the artist's way of thinking.
The central and titular work of the exhibition is the marble sculpture ‘Jednia’ (1994), dealing with the theme of motherhood, which the artist constantly explores in her marbles that balance between abstraction and figuration. ‘Unity’ belongs to a series of sculptures depicting the moment of birth and the primordial unity of mother and child's body.
The second major theme of the exhibition is metaphysical abstractions dedicated to loved ones, reflecting on time, fate and transience. Examples include ‘Hourglass’ (2005) in marble and ‘Fatum’ (1995) in basalt - sculptures with a mournful character, guiding the viewer from birth to death.
The artist also works in other materials such as bronze, granite, basalt, epoxy and porcelain, often combining them. The experimental and surreal nature of her art is well reflected in ‘Egg of Hope’ (2004), a sculpture of basalt, steel and ostrich eggs, rediscovered especially for this exhibition.
The exhibition runs until 30 August 2025 - you are welcome!
